Upstream Oil & Gas Instrumentation Solutions

Oil and gas production requires reliable measurement from the drilling site to the final export pipeline. Pressure, temperature, level and flow data are essential for maintaining process safety, improving production efficiency and identifying abnormal operating conditions.

Xi'an Smatech Instrument Co., Ltd. provides application-matched instrumentation and integrated monitoring solutions for drilling systems, producing wellheads, separators, treatment equipment, storage tanks and oil and gas pipelines. Our solutions can combine field instruments, local displays, RTU or PLC control, industrial communication and SCADA or cloud-based monitoring.

Complete Measurement from Drilling to Production

1. Drilling and Mud System Monitoring

Drilling operations require continuous monitoring of the circulating mud system and high-pressure drilling lines.

Typical measurement points include:

  • Standpipe and manifold pressure

  • Drilling mud flow

  • Mud tank and pit level

  • Mud temperature

  • Pump discharge pressure

  • Differential pressure

  • Local and remote alarm signals

Recommended instruments include pressure transmitters, differential-pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, non-contact level transmitters and industrial flow meters.

2. Wellhead and Choke Manifold Monitoring

The producing wellhead is one of the most important pressure-monitoring locations in an upstream oil and gas facility. Instruments must withstand vibration, pressure pulsation, outdoor exposure and demanding process conditions.

Typical measurement points include:

  • Tubing pressure

  • Casing pressure

  • Wellhead temperature

  • Choke manifold pressure

  • Choke position

  • Flowline pressure

  • Combustible-gas detection

Pressure and temperature signals can be connected to a local RTU, PLC or wireless telemetry system for continuous production monitoring and alarm management.

3. Oil, Gas and Water Separation

Three-phase separators divide the incoming wellstream into oil, gas and produced water. Reliable measurement is required to maintain stable separation and prevent liquid carryover or gas blow-by.

Typical measurement points include:

  • Separator operating pressure

  • Oil level

  • Oil-water interface level

  • Gas outlet flow

  • Crude-oil outlet flow

  • Produced-water flow

  • Differential pressure

  • Separator temperature

Suitable instruments include radar level transmitters, guided-wave radar level transmitters, differential-pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters and application-matched flow meters.

4. Treatment and Produced-Water Monitoring

After separation, crude oil, natural gas and produced water may require additional heating, filtration, dehydration or chemical treatment.

Important measurements include:

  • Heater-treater temperature

  • Filter differential pressure

  • Chemical injection flow

  • Produced-water flow

  • Tank and vessel level

  • Pipeline pressure

  • Gas and liquid flow

Instrument selection must consider process temperature, pressure, fluid composition, corrosiveness, solids, gas content and hazardous-area requirements.

5. Storage Tank Measurement

Reliable tank measurement supports inventory management, overfill prevention and production accounting.

Typical measurement points include:

  • Crude-oil tank level

  • Water tank level

  • Interface level

  • Tank temperature

  • Tank pressure

  • High-level and overfill alarms

Radar level transmitters are widely used for non-contact tank measurement. Other available technologies include guided-wave radar, hydrostatic level transmitters and magnetic level indicators.

6. Pipeline and Export Metering

Oil and gas pipelines require stable pressure and flow monitoring for transportation, allocation measurement, leak detection and export operations.

Typical measurement points include:

  • Pipeline inlet and outlet pressure

  • Pipeline temperature

  • Oil flow

  • Natural-gas flow

  • Produced-water flow

  • Filter differential pressure

  • Metering-skid conditions

  • Leakage and pressure-drop monitoring

Depending on the process medium and measurement objective, flow technologies may include Coriolis, turbine, vortex, ultrasonic, electromagnetic and differential-pressure flow meters.

Integrated RTU, SCADA and Remote Monitoring

Field instruments can be integrated into a complete monitoring architecture:

Field Instruments → RTU or PLC → 4G, LoRa, RS485, Ethernet or Fiber → SCADA or Cloud Platform

The monitoring system can provide:

  • Real-time pressure, temperature, level and flow data

  • Production trend analysis

  • Remote well and pipeline monitoring

  • High and low alarm notifications

  • Local data storage

  • Equipment-status monitoring

  • Communication-failure alarms

  • Centralized management of multiple field locations

Instrument Selection Support

Correct instrument selection depends on more than measurement range. Each application should be evaluated according to:

  • Process medium

  • Pressure and temperature range

  • Required accuracy

  • Wetted materials

  • Process connection

  • Electrical output

  • Communication protocol

  • Power supply

  • Enclosure protection

  • Installation conditions

  • Hazardous-area classification

  • Local certification requirements

Xi’an Smatech Instrument Co., Ltd. supports customers with instrument selection, technical configuration, datasheets, quotations, inspection coordination and export documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which instruments are commonly used at an oilfield wellhead?

Wellhead monitoring commonly uses pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, choke-position monitoring devices, flow meters and combustible-gas detectors. The exact configuration depends on well pressure, production medium and communication requirements.

Which level transmitter is suitable for an oil and gas separator?

Radar, guided-wave radar, differential-pressure and displacer-based technologies may be used. Selection depends on pressure, temperature, dielectric constant, interface conditions, foam and vessel geometry.

Can oilfield measurement data be transmitted remotely?

Yes. Pressure, temperature, level and flow data can be transmitted through 4G, LoRa, RS485, Ethernet, radio or fiber networks to an RTU, SCADA system or cloud platform.

Can SMATECH help select instruments for a complete project?

Yes. Customers can provide the process medium, measuring range, operating pressure, temperature, process connection, output signal, communication method and installation drawings. SMATECH can then prepare an application-matched instrument configuration and commercial proposal.
